The Five Senses

California State Standard
Grade 2
1.g Students know sound is made by vibrating objects and can be described by its pitch and volume.

Introduction
The five senses, sight, taste, smell, sound, and touch allow us to interact with the world around us. We use our senses everyday when they send messages to our brain to tell us important information. In this lesson we will take a look at each of the five senses, discuss each senses function, and discover how we use our senses on a day to day basis.

Lesson
Let's learn about our 5 senses!

In order to remember our 5 senses, let's learn “The 5 Senses Song!”

Now lets put your new knowledge to the test! Check out these games on the 5 senses!

Task
Using the resources listed above and below and any other credible/educational source you choose, (remember, Wikipedia is not a credible source) create a collage in Microsoft Word. Your collage must include at least 3 pictures per sense showing either ways or things that we use that particular sense for. For example, under taste you make have a picture of a tongue, ice cream, and potato chips. The tongue is wear our taste buds are located which allow us to taste the ice cream and potato chips and discover how one snack is sweet while the other is salty. In addition to your 3 pictures (you may have more if you choose), you must write 2 to 4 sentences telling about the function of each sense and why it is important. When your assignment is completed, please post it to the classroom blog (refer to your “classroom technology cheat sheet” if you forgot how to do this) and share your collages with your classmates.

Process
Before beginning the 5 Senses Collage Assignment, please answer the following questions:
What are the 5 senses?

What are the functions of each of the 5 senses?
Why is each of the senses important?

Once you have answered these questions, you may begin searching the internet for your pictures for your collage. Once you have found your pictures and saved them to your computer, open a new document in Microsoft word and begin your collage. Include the title of each sense, your 3 pictures, and a minimum of 2 sentences telling the function and the importance of each of the senses.

Conclusion
Our 5 senses allow us to explore and interact with the world around us. We often take for granted how lucky we are that we have our senses to teach us new things everyday. During each day, tyr to stop and think about what sense you are using at that very moment. Like right now! You are using your eyes to read this, and your sens of touch to feel the computer keys and the mouse to move through the blog. Our senses are so important and now you know why they are important and what each of them does! Great work!
